AMC Announces Walking Dead Spin-off Series

AMC has just announced that they want to expand it's Walking Dead franchise, with a spin-off series that will focus on a completely different group of survivors being in the early stages of development. It's also been confirmed that Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert will be the executive produces of this spin-off show.

AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement that, “Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer. We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Kirkman added that, "After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn't be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn't tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing."

My Thoughts

The Walking Dead is one of my favourite TV series at the moment, and also really enjoy the comic series. I do however question whether this is necessary, as although there are some spin-off that are good, there are others that ruin the reputation of the shows they spin-off from. I am however optimistic that this will be a good thing, and can't wait for it to come out.
