Uncanny Avengers #12 Review

Writer: Rick Remender
Artist: Salvador Larroca

This has been an amazing series, and although it has been ever so slightly inconsistent over recent issues it has still been amazing, building up to something spectacular, with Rick Remender continuing the amazing saga he started in his Uncanny X-Force series brilliantly.

Plot

Scarlet Witch has seen what is to come if they don't act now, and tries to convince Wonder Man to help her and the Apocalypse Twins, Uriel and Eimin save mutants from a future hell.

Review

This was yet another very good issue, and although the series has struggled ever so slightly since the big revelation in issue 9, it continues to be very interesting and at times exciting, and Rick Remender shows that he knows what he's doing. At the same time this issue still didn't give much major development, as although there were some interesting developments they didn't have much affect till later on in the issue. Also the story is ever so slightly slow, and hasn't felt like a proper team book since the revelation. In saying that Remender has done a great job of showing the emotions of the characters, and how their decisions are far from easy, with the tone throughout being brilliant, adding a lot of depth.

The artwork on this issue was also very good, and Salvador Larroca did a fantastic job. Now I was slightly disappointed that Daniel Acuña wasn't working on this issue, but who better to take over for one issue than Larroca. The detail in Larroca's artwork was as usual amazing, with the characters facial reactions and emotions being brilliantly handled throughout, adding a lot of depth and tone to the issue.  I also really liked Larroca's layouts as although the backgrounds were slightly plain at times it really helped the story to flow smoothly, also adding more depth to the story as well. There were however a couple of moments that I felt looked slightly awkward, but overall Larroca's artwork was simply amazing.

This issue started with a look into the future, showing the Apocalypse Twins time in one of the Red Skull's mutant interment camps, and how it would change them into what they are now. This was a very interesting sequence and although I'm sure we'll see more of the Apocalypse Twins past in the future of this story, it shows why they're the way they are. On top of this it was nice to see Kang return to the story, as I was hoping that he'd have a bigger role in this story, something that he's not done so far, and hopefully this changes that.

Both groups of X-Men would also finally notice the Apocalypse Twins actions in this issue, having their own opinions of it, which was something that really interested me. Now I know that it's best to focus on the group that the title is named after, and that's the way it should be, but I thought it was nice that Remender managed to find the time to add the X-Men's reaction to these events, as with them being the biggest group of mutants, on top of the amount of experience they've had with Apocalypse related situations in the past it'd be wrong if they weren't involved. I did however at the same time like how it didn't take over the issue, but would also not mind a continuation of this in the future.

One of the major developments in this issue would see the Scarlet Witch try and get Wonder Man to help her and the Apocalypse Twins with their plan. Now I know that the Apocalypse Twins had a long interaction with the Scarlet Witch in the last issue, but her decision to help them so quick was a bit sudden. I did however enjoy seeing her attempt to win over Wonder Man's help, and seeing it was also nice to see the connection that these two characters have developed over the years. I did however feel that this was a bit of a slow development, and could have had better results in this issue, but at the same time look forward to seeing how this will affect the story going forward.

Final Verdict

This was a brilliant continuation to Remender's Apocalypse saga, having a lot of depth and drama throughout. It also had some very emotional sequences, showing some of the Apocalypse Twins past, and also had a lot of mystery throughout. It was however once again slightly slow, with not a great lot of development that pays of in this issue, overall feeling once again like set-up work. I would however still highly recommend this issue and the story so far.
