A new age is about to dawn for the DC Universe, as James Gunn puts into motion his vision for the future of these beloved heroes. Back when it was first announced that the Guardians of the Galaxy director was taking over creative control of DC Studios, alongside Peter Safran, the response was more than a little mixed. On the one hand you had those that felt DC's previous attempt at building a cinematic universe had fallen flat on its face, whilst others were reluctant to see a full reboot wipe away its few redeeming features. As we move into this new age for the franchise, we finally get our first look at James Gunn's Superman movie, with the first trailer dropping earlier today.
There is a lot to digest from this first look, as not only do we get our first look at David Corenswet as both Superman and Clark Kent, but also a glimpse at the DC Universe as a whole. In doing so we'll see the likes of Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabella Merced), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) all make their live-action debuts on the silver screen. The more interesting takeaways from the trailer are the ones more centred around the Man of Steel himself, with our first glimpse at the latest Daily Planet crew, a new Lex Luthor (Nicholas Holt) and the arrival of Superman's beloved pet dog Krypto all sure to get fans excited.
This bold approach has all the potential of streamlining this new DC Universe into a self efficient world, bypassing the need for multiple origin stories, but on the flip side it may very well be biting off more than it can chew. Time will tell which proves to be the case, but one thing is certain; Gunn and Safran have a clear vision of what they're looking to build. No matter how this all plays out, there is sure to be a mixture of differentiating opinions, but if this trailer is anything to go off then there is plenty of hope for the franchise's future.
Superman is set to soar into a cinema near you July 11th, 2025.
