JAMES GUNN'S SUPERMAN Gets FIRST Official Trailer

A new age is about to dawn for the DC Universe, as James Gunn puts into motion his vision for the future of these beloved heroes. Back when it was first announced that the Guardians of the Galaxy director was taking over creative control of DC Studios, alongside Peter Safran, the response was more than a little mixed. On the one hand you had those that felt DC's previous attempt at building a cinematic universe had fallen flat on its face, whilst others were reluctant to see a full reboot wipe away its few redeeming features. As we move into this new age for the franchise, we finally get our first look at James Gunn's Superman movie, with the first trailer dropping earlier today.

There is a lot to digest from this first look, as not only do we get our first look at David Corenswet as both Superman and Clark Kent, but also a glimpse at the DC Universe as a whole. In doing so we'll see the likes of Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabella Merced), and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi) all make their live-action debuts on the silver screen. The more interesting takeaways from the trailer are the ones more centred around the Man of Steel himself, with our first glimpse at the latest Daily Planet crew, a new Lex Luthor (Nicholas Holt) and the arrival of Superman's beloved pet dog Krypto all sure to get fans excited.

This bold approach has all the potential of streamlining this new DC Universe into a self efficient world, bypassing the need for multiple origin stories, but on the flip side it may very well be biting off more than it can chew. Time will tell which proves to be the case, but one thing is certain; Gunn and Safran have a clear vision of what they're looking to build. No matter how this all plays out, there is sure to be a mixture of differentiating opinions, but if this trailer is anything to go off then there is plenty of hope for the franchise's future.

Superman is set to soar into a cinema near you July 11th, 2025.

Terrifying FIRST LOOK at IT: WELCOME TO DERRY

We're set to return to the town of Derry next year, with the highly anticipated prequel to Stephen King's It close on the horizon. So far we've had very little to go off when it comes to It: Welcome to Derry, but now we get our first look at the series, with HBO sharing this teaser following House of the Dragon's second season finale.

Captioned with the tag “This ain't American. This is Derry.” the six second clip introduces a new set of children to Stephen King's world of It. What becomes of them is still very much a mystery, but what is for sure is that they're in for a terrifying experience.

The biggest omission from this incredibly short clip is none other than Pennywise himself, and I love that. When it comes to brief teasers like this, especially when little has already been shared, less is always more. Now we know that Bill Skarsgård is set to return as the maniacal shape-shifting clown, but given we've seen plenty of the character in both parts of Andy Muschietti's It adaptation, seeing him here isn't necessary. What we get is nonetheless a truly horrific sight, that looks befitting a Stephen King adaptation. The blood and unrelenting terror packed within this clip is sure to entice fans of the book or films, with the mysterious woman at the end certain to spawn speculation.

It: Welcome to Derry is scheduled to arrive on HBO sometime in 2025.

BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE Gets a Spooktacular SECOND Trailer

Tim Burton is set to return to the gothic horror filmmaking that he's best known for, reviving a concept that helped shoot him to fame thirty-six years ago. The concept in question is of course the wacky, yet mysterious Betelgeuse, with the undead trickster making his long awaited return to cinemas in less than a month. Though we've still got a short wait on our hands, Warner Bros. has given us plenty to speculate over, having recently dropped a second trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice a couple of weeks ago.

The trailer quickly bridges the gap between films, with the Deetz family making a return to Winter River following the death of Charles Deetz. Introducing us to a new generation of the family, whilst also showcasing some familiar faces, the two and a half minute clip definitely manages to entice, with it not being long until the ghost with the most makes an appearance.

Now when it comes to reviving cult classics like Beetlejuice, there's always the chance that it won't live up to experience. Especially when so much time has elapsed between entries. Things do look promising for this long awaited sequel, however, with the various trailers and clips that Warner Bros. have teased sure to get fans hyped. It is also a joy to see Michael Keaton return to the titular role, with Jenna Ortega also looking a welcome addition to this wacky world.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to arrive in cinemas September 6th.

FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA Review

It's been nine years since George Miller resurrected his legendary Mad Max series, with Fury Road being a marvellous addition to his dystopian universe. One of the more popular additions during said outing was the introduction of Imperator Furiosa, with Charlize Theron's performance catapulting the character into instant cult status. Naturally it was only a matter of time before the character got her own feature film, and after several delays to production we finally got it in the form of a prequel story.

Set a couple of decades before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road, the plot delves into Furiosa's (Anya Taylor-Joy) origin, showing us how she became the badass that we were introduced to in the aforementioned film. Growing up in the Green Place of Many Mothers, our protagonist is quickly taken captive by the great biker horde, led by their deranged warlord, Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). Whilst roaming the Wasteland, the band of bikers discover the Citadel, a prosperous environment ruled by Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme). As these two powerhouses fight for control, Furiosa finds herself stuck in the middle, looking for both revenge and a way home.

The world that George Miller has built over these last five films has been nothing short of astounding, with the cinematography in the last two being particularly majestic. What makes the Wasteland of Mad Max so enthralling, however, is the depth of characters within it, with the power hungry struggle throughout this post-apocalypse being gripping at every turn. This is no different in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, as whether it's the megalomaniac tendencies of our antagonists or the strength of Furiosa herself, the script from Miller and Nico Lathouris delivers at every turn. The way the director shoots action also enthrals, being as spontaneous and gratuitous as we're accustomed to from the series.

Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the titular role of Furiosa, having some impressive shoes to fill from Charlize Theron. For the most part the young actress, known for her roles in Split and The Queen's Gambit, does a fairly solid job of making the role her own. Showing a more delicate side to the rugged character we were introduced to in Fury Road, Taylor-Joy takes us on a journey that brings more humanity to Furiosa. This ultimately leads to a lot of pros and cons, as despite lacking the strong leadership skills Theron showcased in Fury Road, the actress delivers a gradual progression from nativity to vengeful. The dynamic between Taylor-Joy and her co-stars is also a testament to her acting ability, with the actress bouncing off the disciplined characteristics of Tom Burke's Praetorian Jack and the insanity of Chris Hemsworth's Dementus perfectly. Alyla Browne also deserves credit for her role as an even younger Furiosa, with the actress portraying tremendous fear and dread, whilst retaining a semblance of loyalty and strength.

One thing that the series has been known for over the years, is giving spectacular action sequences. This is no different with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, with the violence being very gratuitous at times. Whether it's dismemberment by motorcycles or War Boys leaping to their death in the name of Immortan Joe, the film isn't shy about going the extra mile, with there being plenty of eye catching moments throughout. The action isn't confined to close up barbarity, however, with there being plenty of good old fashioned carnage on the post-apocalyptic highways. The most notable amongst this comes in the form of a War Rig chase scene, with the director finding new ways to deliver mass destruction. This high octane sequence also makes room for the arrival of Tom Burke's Praetorian Jack, and despite the character's involvement being rather minor in the grander scheme, Burke does an amazing job of giving us a level headed member of Immortan Joe’s crew.

The Mad Max franchise has had its fair share of maniacal antagonists over the years, with this latest entry introducing yet another tyrant to the Wasteland. The tyrant in question is Dementus, and despite not having Max Rockatansky standing in his way, this doesn't stop him from being any less dangerous. Bringing this sadistic character to life is none other than Thor actor, Chris Hemsworth, with the role being a change in direction for the Australian born star. Having played heroic roles for the majority of his career, both within and outside the superhero world, it was nice to see him sink his teeth into a villainous role. Bringing the same level of grandiosity as in previous roles, Hemsworth delivers a gritty performance that is quite possibly his greatest to date. Conveying a disciplined, yet insane demeanour, the actor does an astounding job of making the audience believe that this warlord will stop and nothing to get what he wants. He also brings a subtle level of humanity to the villain, showing that the character has experienced some form of trauma to make him the way he is.

I briefly touched on the cinematography of the last two films early, with Simon Duggan being responsible for the vivid visuals of this Wasteland. Taking over from the now retired John Seale, Duggan does an amazing job of bridging the gap between the visual style of Beyond the Thunderdome and Fury Road. Despite being closer suited to the latter, the toned down palette allows for a more dramatic tone, whilst still showcasing the vastness of the landscape. The lighting also pops throughout, as whether it's the low-key highlights during the darker sequences or the saturation of the Wasteland during the daytime, it balances the various tones to deliver an eye-catching product.

The only major drawback throughout all this, is that because it is indeed a prequel the impending climax is extremely predictable. Now don't get me wrong, this does detract too much from an otherwise sensational story, but when you know certain characters need to live and others haven't appeared prior, it's not hard to work out their fate. The journey is nonetheless fantastic, with the suspense and tension making it easy to forget these minor setbacks.

Verdict

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a truly magnificent extension of George Miller's post-apocalyptic universe. Giving us a dramatic origin story for our beloved heroine, the cast and crew deliver a captivating narrative that is all about loss, despair and a longing for revenge. The action and eye-catching cinematography also lives up to the legacy that has been built throughout this franchise, with the Wasteland being as beautiful as ever.

8/10

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga comes out on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD and DVD August 12th.

First Look at THE LAST OF US SEASON 2

The second season of House of the Dragon came to its dramatic climax last night, but already HBO are teasing their next wave of releases. One such teaser comes in the form of a 24 second video for The Last of Us Season 2, which was shared on X.
Focusing on Joel (Pedro Pascal) being confronted by a mysterious figure (Catherine O'Hara) over his actions at the end of the first season, this short teaser gives us a glimpse at what's in store for our survivors. Emulating the tone of the second game, showing a more mature Ellie (Bella Ramsey), the clip also allows for our first glimpse at Kaitlyn Dever as the complex villain, Abby. We also see the return of Jeffrey Wright as Isaac, as well as a glimpse of Isabela Merced as Dina

The brief clip also showcases a couple of moments that look as if they're taken straight from the video game, leaving us questioning whether our characters will meet a similar fate this time around. Though there's no exact release date, The Last of Us Season 2 will arrive at some point in 2025

Gotham TV Series Coming to Fox

Fox has landed the rights to make the upcoming TV series "Gotham" working with Warner Bros. TV and Mentalist creator Bruno Heller. It has been reported by Deadline that the TV series will supposedly centre  James Gordon also featuring some of Gotham's most notorious villains.

My Thoughts

I've always wanted to see a Batman related live action TV series come out, as although Batman himself should stay away from TV as due to being very successful in films over the last few years he should be kept for that. I do however feel that this is a very good concept for a Batman centred series, as although I personally have always felt that Nightwing should be made into a TV series, this concept intrigues me slightly more, and I hope that we also get to see some heroes along the way. I do however feel that this all rides now on who they get to play Gordon as if they get that wrong the series is sure to fail. I do however also hope that this doesn't turn into a CSI, flashy TV series and is more like of a sci-fi style detective show with a similar style to Fringe or X-Files, without being the exact same style though.
