All-New Invaders #1 Review

Writer: James Robinson
Artist: Steve Pugh

What kind of threat can bring the Invaders back together? Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

Eisner Award winner James Robinson (STARMAN, EARTH 2) returns to MARVEL, uniting with Steve Pugh (ANIMAL MAN, HOTWIRE, GEN-X) to create a unique, modern day take on the INVADERS. The KREE EMPIRE intends to conquer the universe using a weapon that will grant them an army of NORSE GODS. It falls to four heroes united by their past—CAPTAIN AMERICA, NAMOR, THE ORIGINAL HUMAN TORCH and the WINTER SOLDIER—who must now face the future and wage war against the Kree to save Earth.

I've never really been the biggest fan of the Invaders, as despite not disliking them, and enjoying the characters individually I have never really had much of an interest in the team (apart from flashbacks in Captain America issues). I have however been really excited for this series as with it having the characters in the present, along with the creative team of James Robinson and Steve Pugh it grabbed my attention.

James Robinson is probably best known for his work at DC Comics, having recently finished his run on Earth 2. He has however started writing for Marvel again, with this along with the upcoming Fantastic Four relaunch being the first two titles he's working on. As for this issue Robinson did a terrific job of setting up this storyline, introducing the Kree as the main threat perfectly. I also loved how it focused mainly on Jim Hammond (the original Human Torch) as although it would have been nice to have seen more of the other Invaders, it was especially nice to see that Jim won't be a background character.

Steve Pugh also makes a return to Marvel with this series, proving why he's such a wonderful artist. Now I have to start by saying that I wasn't quite as impressed with his art as I usually am, as despite there being nothing wrong from Pugh's side, Guru Efx' colours didn't suit Pugh's art quite as well as the colourists that worked alongside him at DC Comics. The layout and impactful nature of Pugh's art was however as usual very impressive, with the intensity in some of Jim's expressions adding a lot of excitement.

All-New Invaders gets off to a great start, and despite needing a few more issues to see just how good the series will be, I for one look forward to what comes next. Highly recommended.

Batman: Face the Face Review

Writer: James Robinson
Artists: Leonard Kirk & Don Kramer

I'm back to doing my Batman reviews, and I still plan on reviewing the remaining key Batman stories up until the start of the New 52. This is also my ninth review on the series with my last review being on Batman: Face the Face.

Plot

It has been one year since Batman left Gotham City in the hands of Harvey Dent, but when Harvey is a key suspect in a series of murders following Batman's return it makes things difficult, and it's questionable whether he'll fall back into darkness or not.

Review

This was an amazing story, and one of my personal favourite One Year Later stories. James Robinson did an amazing job with this story, and although he isn't quite as good at writing Batman as he is writing Superman, he did a brilliant job with the character. I especially loved the tone of this story, and enjoyed how Robinson took us back to a more classic Batman story, having it filled with mystery, and detective work, both of which added a lot of suspense, and drama to the story. I also loved the dark tone of this story, as it added a lot of depth to the story. I also loved the dialogue that Robertson added to this story, as it was very interesting, especially the dialogue from Batman. I did however feel that it dragged slightly at times, which reduced the overall quality of the story a bit, but besides that Robertson did a fantastic job of giving us a unique Batman story that was extremely interesting.

The art on this story was also very good, and both Leonard Kirk, and Don Kramer did an amazing job. I did however prefer Kramer's art overall, as I felt it suited the story more, with the dark, and gritty sequences really standing out during his artwork. Both artists work was however highly detailed, with little to no imperfections. There was however one small thing that I disliked about the art, and this was another reason that I preferred Kramer's overall, as I didn't like how Kirk drew smiles, as they looked very awkward, and unrealistic. I also loved the highly detailed backgrounds that both artists drew, as they were very realistic, and along with the layout added a lot of depth to the story. I also loved how both artists drew the characters throughout this story, with everyone looking amazing, though I did especially enjoy Kramer's artwork on Harvey Dent.

This story would come following the big Infinite Crisis storyline, where all the main heroes left for a year. Now they didn't leave in publication wise, as this would come straight after that event, but story wise one year had passed. I loved the changes that happened in that time, and how Gotham took a dramatic change, reverting itself back to the Gotham that it truly should be, with James Gordon as Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department, and a lot of villains roaming the city. I did however feel that it was good that Robinson didn't have too many Infinite Crisis references, as although that was a good story, it had passed, and it would ruin it for Batman fans who don't care for Infinite Crisis. At the same time the few references were nice.

With a title like Face to Face it would be obvious that Harvey Dent, better known as Two-Face would make an appearance in this story. Two-Face is one of Batman's biggest villains ever, and like most of Batman's classic villains back then he needed a big development, and turning him back to Harvey Dent was that, with the Hush storyline revealing that. I did however love how this year without Batman around changed Harvey, as due to being put in charge of protecting Gotham, to then be accused of multiple murder on Batman's return would be a big blow for him. I also enjoyed how this story showed Harvey wrestling with his thoughts, not wanting to turn back to Two-Face, but at the same time furious about being accused of such a thing.

This story would see Batman, and Robin (Tim Drake) working together throughout, something that I was extremely happy about as prior to the Batman and Robin series there wasn't a huge amount of teaming up between the two (and the Batman and Robin series was also technically two different characters in Dick Grayson, and Damian Wayne). I also really enjoyed seeing the chemistry between the two, and how they are working better together than they ever have before. I also felt that this was a key point for both Bruce, and Tim, as with the recent events affecting Tim so much he needs someone to look up to, and Bruce also needs the same as to avoid possibly loosing another member of his Bat-Family.

This story would also have villains galore, having an array of Batman rogues making  appearances, with Poison Ivy, Mad Hatter, Ventriloquist and Scarface, Killer Moth, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze, Firebug, and more being featured throughout. Batman has some of the best villains ever, so with all these amazing villains gathered in the one story it's bound to make things interesting. There was however a small part of me that felt that it was just a little too much, as although it was fun to see all these amazing characters, if it was slightly fewer it would allow them to do more, as most landed up being short cameos. I did however love the line Gordon spoke about Arkham Asylum having a revolving door, as these villains seem to have no trouble escaping time, and time again.

Final Verdict

This was a fantastic book, and was one of the better One Year Later stories. It showed Batman at his best, having his detective skills at the max, whilst also showing him taking out bad guy after bad guy. There was also some brilliant teamwork between the Dark Knight, and the Boy Wonder, and the turmoil that Harvey Dent was going through was outstanding, adding a lot of suspense. Due to all this it's extremely easy to recommend this story, and if you've read Infinite Crisis, 52, or any other One Year Later stories then you should definitely give this a try.

The next Batman book I'll be reviewing will be Batman: Detective.

Earth 2 #6

Writer: James Robinson
Artist: Nicola Scott

SPOILERS BLOCKED OUT IN WHITE!
(Highlight White Areas to Reveal Spoilers)

I have been enjoying this series so far and it has been one best comics in The New 52, at least from their Second Wave. Robinson has overall done a brilliant job on this series but the true credit goes to Scott who has produced some amazing artwork over the series and the series wouldn't be the same without it (issue #0 showed that).

Plot

This issue sees the conclusion to the fight between the new wonders of Earth 2 and Grundy. Green Lantern is still in the grey with his deceased boyfriend Sam but eventually escapes. Sloan plans on nuking Washington D.C. to Commander Khan's fury, and finally upon Green Lanterns return we see the final fight between him (The Green) and Grundy (The Grey)

Review

This is still a great series and this was a good issue but it was a bit of a disappointing ending to what had been a great story. It was disappointing because for all the build up the previous issues have had and all the tremendous fights from them issues the final fight in this issue kind of fizzled out. It started great and was very exciting to start of with Flash, Hawkgirl and Atom struggling against this brute force in Grundy. What I didn't like though was when Green Lantern returned Grundy seemed to loose all his fight and it was pretty one sided.

Robinson however has still done a great job at writing overall and I love the chemistry he's injected into the series between all the characters who barely know each other and love how he show's all these different personalities brilliantly. He would have done a near perfect job on this issue if it wasn't for the final fight at the end which is a shame as this story overall has been brilliant.

Scott's art in this issue is once again superb and I love the way she draws all the characters. I like how all these classic characters have a newish look whilst being very different from their New Earth (regular universe) counterparts. Sinclair also deserves credit for the art as you can really see all the different colours from the different characters shine out, and he deserves credit for that.

The character who steals the series has to be the Flash as he is hilarious and I love how we see that even thought he has this brilliant new power he's still scared and sometimes isn't sure what to do with it. Atom is another brilliant character and I loved how Hawkgirl realised his intentions would change one Green Lantern took the fight to Grundy as his secondary objective was to bring Hawkgirl and the other new wonders in. It's nice how Atom's now very military and takes orders well, as prior to New 52, he was quite annoying and went about like a bumbling idiot, being over excited one minute and very depressing the next. I also like the Hawkgirl character in this series and she is very similar to what she was prior to New 52 as in she can take care of herself and if need be can take charge pretty quickly.

I have also been enjoying seeing Sloan's true agenda starting to show as he sends the nukes to D.C. more to get rid of the new wonders than to get rid of Grundy. It will also be interesting to see what he has planned in latter issues and what will happen if he ever comes face to face with the new wonders.

I also liked how we see Green Lantern breaking free of the Grey and that even though he still loves Sam he will not spend his life in the Grey and that he needs to be the hero. There was a lot of emotion in that sequence and from the end of the previous issue it appeared he might have stayed. Now that he has decided to go alone it will also be interesting to see what happens to him and if he will be involved with the other wonders again.

Final Verdict

Even though slightly disappointing I would still highly recommend this issue and the series as overall it has been good and very fun. I am really looking forward to seeing what will happen in the future of this series and hope the next story is as good as this one was.
