Avengers #22 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Leinil Francis Yu

I have really been enjoying Infinity so far, and although the Avengers tie-ins haven't been the best part about Infinity, they have still been very interesting and exciting, having a lot of influence over the main series. I am however really looking forward to this issue, as with the Avengers heading back to Earth it should make for some interesting developments.

Plot

As the Avengers make their way back to Earth Titan is attacked.

Review

This was yet another fantastic issue, being yet another terrific addition to Infinity. Jonathan Hickman did a spectacular job of building on from the events of Infinity #5, and would also do an amazing job of building up to the Avengers return to Earth. Hickman would also handle the pacing of this issue brilliantly, as although there wasn't as much excitement in this issue as some of the other Avengers tie-ins, it would have some very amazing character interaction that was very interesting, adding a lot of depth to the issue. On top of that the issue would also have some interesting developments of it's own, as although the issue was mostly set-up work, it had some brilliant moments.

The artwork on this issue was simply amazing, and Leinil Francis Yu did an outstanding job. Now I have felt that Yu's art has been lacking the usual high level detail over the last couple of issues, but that would no longer be a problem, as the detail of Yu's artwork in this issue was simply spectacular, as although there was still the odd imperfection, it was back to the super high quality that Yu is known to produce. Yu would also do a fantastic job of showing the emotion on the characters in this issue, adding a lot of depth to the issue. On top of that Yu's layouts would also once again be fantastic, being very dynamic, and adding a lot of suspense as well as yet more depth to the issue.

This issue would start by showing a new romance amongst the Avengers, with Cannonball and Smasher developing a relationship. Although I'm not sure what to make of this new romance as a whole, the sequence itself was very interesting, as well as extremely entertaining. Now the main thing that made this entertaining was that Cannonball and Smasher wouldn't be the only two involved, with Sunspot teasing the new couple. I will however be looking forward to seeing more development from this, as although I don't know whether the romance will continue to be interesting, I look forward to finding out.

We'd also get to see some development from Infinity #5, with this issue expanding on the teaser development about Titan being attacked. Now I won't go into any detail as to avoid spoilers, but this sequence would add a lot of excitement and mystery to the issue, with the attackers being extremely interesting. I also enjoyed seeing Black Dwarf again, and the interaction he would have with one of Thanos' minions would be very entertaining.

The Avengers would learn the full extent of Thanos' invasion in this issue, and we'd also see their response to this. Now the response itself was nothing less than expected, but the interaction between certain characters following this would be very interesting. The most interesting out of these would be the interactions that Manifold would have with Captain America, Captain Marvel and Thor, with all of them adding a lot of depth and drama to the issue, as well as suspense. On top of this it was interesting to see the Avengers come up with a plan of action against Thanos, and overall I am even more excited to see the eventual meeting between Thanos and the Avengers.

Final Verdict

This was a brilliant issue, doing a terrific job of continuing the Avengers journey to Earth. It would also do an amazing job of continuing from some of the teaser developments from the last issue, with the attack on Titan adding some mystery to the issue. On top of that there would be some brilliant character interaction, and I for one can't wait for the next issue to come out. Due to this I'd highly recommend this issue, as well as the main part of the Infinity event so far.
