Avengers World #1 Review

Writers: Jonathan Hickman and Nick Spencer
Artist: Stefano Caselli

Will Avengers World be a worthy addition or does it just prove that there’s too many Avengers titles out the now? Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

Earth's Mightiest Heroes have returned from the stars-- but on the world they left behind, new threats have emerged, and The Avengers will be tested like never before. In one cataclysmic day, the face of the Marvel Universe will change forever-- and the fight for Earth's future will begin. A globe-spanning epic of empires and armies, and the brave few who stand between them and us.

The big question that I keep asking is: do we really need more Avengers series’? The answer is no, but like most Avengers fans it’s hard not to get as many as you can, especially when they’re written by the likes of Jonathan Hickman and Nick Spencer. In saying that it is still not necessary to have three main Avengers series’, with over five other Avengers related series and the quality of this opening issue further proved that.

Hickman and Spencer did a great job of introducing us to the new series, which has a very interesting concept behind it. I did however feel that they tried to do a little too much too soon in this issue, as despite the argument that it’s necessary, the amount of different side plots could have been diluted down a bit. Or started over two issues instead of one. Hickman and Spencer did however give us a lot of suspense in this issue, with the mysterious nature behind the threat being extremely intriguing. I do however kind of wish that they’d use a different roster than the one from the main Avengers series though.

Stefano Caselli did a phenomenal job of the art in this issue, much like he did in his short stint on the main Avengers series. The detail in Caselli’s art never fails to impress, with every page and every panel being simply beautiful. The layout of Caselli’s art also helps with the story’s flow, as well as giving a lot of tone and atmosphere, with some sequences looking simply awesome. There is also a lot of tension and emotion shown throughout the characters facial expressions, and despite them feeling ever so slightly stiff and awkward at times, this gave a lot of realism as well as a serious tone to the story.

Avengers Word may take a few issues to get off the ground, but this is a decent start. It does however feel a little unnecessary so far as they could have easily saved this story for the main Avengers series. I do however still recommend giving this a try, and especially if you’re a fan of the main series.

New Avengers #12 Review

WARNING: THIS REVIEW WILL SPOIL INFINITY #6!

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Mike Deodato Jr.

Infinity was an amazing event and although I felt that it was the right length, I am still sad that it's ended. We do however get one more instalment in the form of this epilogue, and although I usually feel epilogues are unnecessary and at times purely to make more money, with it being New Avengers I'm sure this one will be good.

Plot

In the aftermath of defeating Thanos, Black Panther has to face some questions over his alliance with Namor while the other Illuminate members have their own personal tasks to attend to.

Review

This was an amazing issue and one of the best epilogue issues to an event that I've read in a while. Jonathan Hickman does a superb job of both following in the aftermath of Infinity, whilst also setting up future events for both the Marvel Universe as a whole, as well as certain Illuminati members personally, with this being a suspenseful issue with a lot of drama. Hickman would also add a lot of excitement and emotion to this issue, as although there wasn't any action it had a lot of tension and intensity, which in itself created some excitement. It is however still only an epilogue with nothing too amazing happening, hence it isn't quite the perfect issue.

The artwork on this issue was also spectacular with Mike Deodato Jr. as usual doing a phenomenal job. The detail in his art would also be very consistent throughout with very few imperfections, if any at all. The best thing about Deodato Jr.'s art would be his layouts which were simply breathtaking, adding a lot of depth and atmosphere to the issue. I was however still not a fan of the way that Deodato. Jr drew Beast, as although it didn't bother me quite as much in this issue, the oversized look of him still makes it feel slightly unrealistic, especially as he's not as big in other series'. The character emotion and facial expressions throughout would however be great adding yet more depth to the issue.

Black Panther's alliance with Namor as part of the Illuminati would come to haunt him in this issue as Shuri and the Dora Milaje question Black Panther over consorting with the Namor the leader of their enemy. Now it was only a matter of time before this came to affect Black Panther, and the way it was handled in this issue was very interesting. Now I won't go into too much detail as to avoid spoilers, but it is certainly not quite what I expected, though it was the natural direction to take this development in, and I will be looking forward to seeing how this will affect Namor and Black Panther's relationship as Illuminati members.

Doctor Strange would be affected a lot during the Infinity event, and this issue would see the Doctor take some measures to rectify this. Yet again I won't go into too much detail but I will say that the sequence had a very eeire and dark tone to it, and I am definitely looking forward to seeing if/how this will affect the series going forward and whether we'll see a change in Doctor Strange from now on. During the sequence itself I also found the interaction between Doctor Strange and Wong set-up this development brilliantly.

Finally Iron Man (Tony Stark), Mr. Fantastic and Beast would remain to talk with Black Swan. Now much like the previous two paragraphs I won't go into too much detail as this is probably the most interesting sequence in the issue and I'd hate to spoil it for anyone. I did however find the tone as well as the dialogue to be very interesting, adding a lot of depth and tension to the issue. I also loved Black Swan's attitude as a whole to be very intriguing and I look forward to seeing what Hickman has in store for her as this series develops beyond Infinity.

Final Verdict

This was a terrific issue and a brilliant epilogue. It would also set-up the future of this series perfectly, utilising the events of Infinity to do this. The issue itself would be very dramatic and exciting, and would have a lot of suspense as well with it's overall tone being simply perfect. Due to this I'd highly recommend this issue as well as the whole of the Infinity event and can't wait to see what will happen in this series next.

Infinity #6 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artists: Jim Cheung & Dustin Weaver

Infinity has been an outstanding event and much better than I originally expected it to be, which is saying a lot considering I always expected it to be amazing. It is however sad to see it come to an end, but it is this shorter series length that I feel has ultimately made it a huge success and it will be interesting to see the fall out after this.

Plot

The Avengers finally make it back to Earth where they face Thanos and his Cull Obsidian.

Review

This was an amazing issue and a terrific ending to the event. Jonathan Hickman has done a phenomenal job with this event, and although there was the odd minor thing that I questioned during this finale, overall it was very fitting and entertaining to read. The tension and drama throughout was simply outstanding with the tone being simply astonishing. I did however feel that a couple of things happened rather suddenly, with the ending itself being very sudden. The narrative of the issue as well as the way it was developed was also outstanding, with the dialogue throughout adding more depth and drama as well as more excitement and intensity.

The artwork throughout this issue would also be phenomenal with both Jim Cheung and Dustin Weaver doing a spectacular job. The detail of both artists work would also be very consistent throughout, as although it was easy to tell both artists work apart, they worked very well of each other, with very few imperfections between them. I did however overall prefer Cheung's artwork, though that is nothing against Weaver's, it's just that Cheung's is more smoother and impactful. I did however find the lack of hair on Cheung's Hulk to be slightly frustrating, though the beautiful and explosive action sequences and character emotion more than made up for that.
We'd finally get to see the Avengers vs. Thanos and his Cull Obsidian in this issue with the Avengers wasting no time in taking the fight to the mad Titan after landing on Earth. Now what I loved most about this would be getting to see the likes of Captain America, Hulk and Thor all go toe-to-toe with Thanos, as although they've done it before, it is always nice to see it time and time again. During the fight I also loved the dialogue and how the Cull Obsidian's involvement would make this much more exciting and intense, with this easily being the fight of the event.

Whilst this is happening that other Avengers would continue battling Black Dwarf and his army on the Peak, finishing the fight that was set-up and started during Avengers #22 and 23. Now I personally felt that this sequences was developed for too long, and could have finished during the Avengers issues themselves. In saying that it would add yet more suspense and excitement to this issue, as well as yet more suspense as well, with some of the dialogue once again being outstanding.
Thanos' son Thane would have a huge role in the way that this event ended. Now I won't go into details but I will say what I thought of the ending as well as Thane's role in the event as a whole. Now Thane's involvement overall hasn't been quite as impactful as I hoped, though the way that he was involved in this issue made up for that. I also found the ending to be very clever, as although it wasn't as exciting as I hoped it would be, as well extremely sudden, it would be very dramatic and intense.

Final Verdict

This was a terrific ending to a outstanding event and it will be a while before Marvel top this. The issue wasn't quite perfect, feeling slightly too quick a pace, though the action and tension throughout would make it a extraordinarily great issue as well as one of the best from the crossover. Due to all this I'd highly recommend this issue as well as the event as a whole.

Avengers #23 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Leinil Francis Yu

Infinity has been an amazing event so far and by far one of the best that Marvel has produced over the last few years, proving that they can still create great crossovers. The main tie-ins from Avengers and New Avengers have also been outstanding as well adding more depth to the story acting as brilliant companion chapters and I will be sad to finish this story.

Plot

As the Avengers near Earth Black Dwarf and his army on the Peak make things more difficult for them.

Review

This was an amazing issue and a brilliant build-up to the final part of Infinity. Jonathan Hickman does a stellar job of continuing the Avengers journey back to Earth, as well as adding plenty of action and excitement at the same time. It is however not quite perfect as although it was very intense and suspenseful, the main Avengers members didn't have too big of a role in the action, with some of the newer members taking centre stage, and although this was nice the thing that I've loved about the Avengers side of Infinity has been seeing Captain America lead his army in battle. The issue would however have plenty of emotion and drama to it and has me excited to read the final part of Infinity.

The artwork on this issue was also outstanding and some of Leinil Francis Yu's best work on this series so far. The detail throughout his work was simply astonishing, with everything looking fantastic. The layout of Yu's art would also yet again impress me very much with it adding a lot of impact and depth to the issue, making the action sequences flow even smoother. Talking of action sequences Yu would also give us some of the most explosive Avengers action sequences in Infinity so far, with them being very intense. The only minor criticism I have on Yu's art is with the character emotion, as there wasn't a huge lot of it in this issue, though considering how awesome the rest of the art is, I don't have a problem with this.

This issue would start with Captain America and Iron Man (Tony Stark) having a discussion about Thanos' actions and where he currently is. Now I personally really enjoyed this sequence as it bridged the two sides of this event perfectly, also connecting the Avengers' current objective with the Illuminati's actions throughout the series perfectly. On top of this it was also nice to see Tony and Cap involved in the same sequence, as we've not had that for some time, and although Tony has been with the Illuminati during this event, he is still very much an Avenger.

We'd also get to see one of Thanos' Cull Obsidian in action during this issue with Black Dwarf fighting the Avengers on the Peak space station. Now Black Dwarf has overall been rather disappointing in this series, though this has turned out to add more suspense and tone, showing that just cause he's the biggest member of the Cull Obsidian, doesn't mean he's the best. The fight between the Avengers and Black Dwarf's army in this issue would also be very exciting, and would easily be one of the best things about this issue. The dialogue during the issue would also be very dramatic and when Gladiator got involved things would get even more exciting. On top of this it was nice to see the Guadians of the Galaxy have a cameo, tying in their events perfectly.

The overall set-up for In Infinity #6 would also be very interesting, as although Cap and the other heavy hitters from the Avengers wouldn't be involved in the action, their actions in this issue would still have a lot of impact on the event as a whole, with it adding a lot of tension and suspense. I also would loved the interaction between Cap and Captain Marvel and overall can't wait to see the Avengers and the Illuminati work together against Thanos in the finale of this event.

Final Verdict

An explosive end to the Avengers tie-ins for Infinity with this issue setting up the final part of the main event brilliantly. The excitement and intensity throughout this issue was simply outstanding and although there were a few minor details that lowered the quality of this issue, overall it was one of the best Avengers tie-ins in this event and I'd highly recommend this issue to anyone.

Avengers #22 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Leinil Francis Yu

I have really been enjoying Infinity so far, and although the Avengers tie-ins haven't been the best part about Infinity, they have still been very interesting and exciting, having a lot of influence over the main series. I am however really looking forward to this issue, as with the Avengers heading back to Earth it should make for some interesting developments.

Plot

As the Avengers make their way back to Earth Titan is attacked.

Review

This was yet another fantastic issue, being yet another terrific addition to Infinity. Jonathan Hickman did a spectacular job of building on from the events of Infinity #5, and would also do an amazing job of building up to the Avengers return to Earth. Hickman would also handle the pacing of this issue brilliantly, as although there wasn't as much excitement in this issue as some of the other Avengers tie-ins, it would have some very amazing character interaction that was very interesting, adding a lot of depth to the issue. On top of that the issue would also have some interesting developments of it's own, as although the issue was mostly set-up work, it had some brilliant moments.

The artwork on this issue was simply amazing, and Leinil Francis Yu did an outstanding job. Now I have felt that Yu's art has been lacking the usual high level detail over the last couple of issues, but that would no longer be a problem, as the detail of Yu's artwork in this issue was simply spectacular, as although there was still the odd imperfection, it was back to the super high quality that Yu is known to produce. Yu would also do a fantastic job of showing the emotion on the characters in this issue, adding a lot of depth to the issue. On top of that Yu's layouts would also once again be fantastic, being very dynamic, and adding a lot of suspense as well as yet more depth to the issue.

This issue would start by showing a new romance amongst the Avengers, with Cannonball and Smasher developing a relationship. Although I'm not sure what to make of this new romance as a whole, the sequence itself was very interesting, as well as extremely entertaining. Now the main thing that made this entertaining was that Cannonball and Smasher wouldn't be the only two involved, with Sunspot teasing the new couple. I will however be looking forward to seeing more development from this, as although I don't know whether the romance will continue to be interesting, I look forward to finding out.

We'd also get to see some development from Infinity #5, with this issue expanding on the teaser development about Titan being attacked. Now I won't go into any detail as to avoid spoilers, but this sequence would add a lot of excitement and mystery to the issue, with the attackers being extremely interesting. I also enjoyed seeing Black Dwarf again, and the interaction he would have with one of Thanos' minions would be very entertaining.

The Avengers would learn the full extent of Thanos' invasion in this issue, and we'd also see their response to this. Now the response itself was nothing less than expected, but the interaction between certain characters following this would be very interesting. The most interesting out of these would be the interactions that Manifold would have with Captain America, Captain Marvel and Thor, with all of them adding a lot of depth and drama to the issue, as well as suspense. On top of this it was interesting to see the Avengers come up with a plan of action against Thanos, and overall I am even more excited to see the eventual meeting between Thanos and the Avengers.

Final Verdict

This was a brilliant issue, doing a terrific job of continuing the Avengers journey to Earth. It would also do an amazing job of continuing from some of the teaser developments from the last issue, with the attack on Titan adding some mystery to the issue. On top of that there would be some brilliant character interaction, and I for one can't wait for the next issue to come out. Due to this I'd highly recommend this issue, as well as the main part of the Infinity event so far.

Infinity #5 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artists: Jerome Opeña & Dustin Weaver

So far Infinity has been an amazing event, and easily one of the best that Marvel has produced in a while. It has especially been brilliant in the last couple of issues, having some phenomenal moments, and if Jonathan Hickman keeps this quality up it could become one of the best events ever.

Plot

The Avengers continue to save world after world from the Builders whilst Thanos tries to make the Illuminati's Antimatter Projection Systems work.

Review

This was a brilliant issue and although it wasn't quite as good as the last couple of issues, it was still a fantastic issue and did a fantastic job of setting up the conclusion. Now it isn't a terrible thing that Jonathan Hickman has slowed the pace down in this issue, as after all the explosive events in the last couple of issues it needed to slow down slightly, and with this being the penultimate issue it is better to do all the building up in this issue, leaving more room for excitement in the conclusion. Besides this however Hickman would also manage to add a lot of drama and suspense, as although the transition between sequences wasn't quite as smooth as it's been up till now, it wouldn't hurt the quality of the issue that much.

The art on this issue was also amazing, as although it wasn't quite as good as it has been up till now, it was still brilliant, and Jerome Opeña and Dustin Weaver did a tremendous job. I did however feel that the detail in this issue wasn't as good as it has been up till now, as although the detail was brilliant throughout most of the issue, there were quite a few imperfections, which is something that we haven't seen too much from Opeña and Weaver so far. The layouts were however once again outstanding, adding a lot of depth and tone to the issue. The small bit of action and character emotion would also be fantastic, with one sequence featuring the Hulk smashing being truly phenomenal.

This issue would start by showing the aftermath of Infinity #4 and Avengers #21 with the Avengers wiping out any remaining Builders, making many Avengers Worlds. Now this wouldn't do much for the story as a whole, setting up the Avengers return to Earth. It was however still very entertaining and interesting, and I found the interaction between Thor and Captain America to be very entertaining. The conversation between Cap and Oracle was also very interesting, and I loved Cap's shock to the appreciation of the planets they're saving.

We'd also get to see the first encounter between Thane and a member of the Cull Obsidian as Ebony Maw would find Thane in this issue. Now I won't go into much detail about this sequence as the major development during it was extremely interesting, even if it was also mainly set-up work. The interaction between Thane and Ebony Maw however was very interesting, and I especially enjoyed the emotion on Thane when he realises that he's a killer just like his father (even though he didn't mean to).

Thanos would also have an impact on this issue, with him and his Cull Obsidian trying to get the Antimatter Projection Systems to work. This would be the continuation of a development that happened in New Avengers #11, and although this issue wouldn't see a lot of development happen, it would still be very interesting to read. I especially enjoyed how much intensity Thanos showed in this sequence, as although he wouldn't be as angry or intense as he was during his fight with Black Bolt, he would still show his disapproval of failure, expecting his Cull Obsidian to find the answer quicker than they are. I also loved seeing the malice in Thanos' facial expressions, as it would add a lot of depth to the sequence.

Final Verdict

This was yet another amazing issue in the Infinity crossover, as although it wasn't quite as good as the last couple of issues, being a bit slower, it did do a brilliant job of setting up the conclusion. The would also be some interesting developments, as well as some explosive artwork, and the issue as a whole has me very excited for the conclusion. Due to this I'd highly recommend this issue as although not quite as good as the last couple of issues it was still an amazing addition to the event.

Uncanny Avengers #13 Review

Writer: Rick Remender
Artist: Daniel Acuña

I've been enjoying this series since it started with it being one of my favourite series out the now. It has however dropped in quality ever so slightly in some of the last few issues, but overall the story is good, and looks to rise back to it's high standard within the next issue or two.

Plot

As the Apocalypse Twins, Uriel and Eimin come closer to their goal Captain America, Wasp and Havok look for some allies.

Review

This was an amazing issue and one of the best the series has produced in the last few months, setting up the next issue perfectly. Rick Remender did a great job of adding a lot of suspense and drama to this issue, as although at the end of the day it was yet another set-up issue it managed to do it in a much more exciting way, adding some shocking developments as well. Remender also did a great job of adding some action to the issue, as although the issue mostly focused on story development, there would be a couple of action sequences that added a bit more excitement to the issue. On top of all that the dialogue in this issue was also handled perfectly, with certain interactions being very intense and interesting.

The artwork on this issue would also be amazing, and it was nice to see Daniel Acuña return for one more issue before Steve McNiven takes over. In saying that however this wasn't Acuña's best work ever, as although for most of the issue it was very highly detailed, there were quite a few imperfections that let the artwork as a whole down a bit. Acuña did however once again produce some amazing layouts in this issue, as although for the most part they were pretty standard, there was the odd moment were it would add a lot more drama and intensity to the story, also being very dynamic. On top of that Acuña also did a great job of showing the character emotions, and his inks and colours help make his art very vibrant.

This issue would start with Havok facing off against Banshee in a fight that started with Banshee against Havok, Wasp and Captain America in the last issue. Although this wasn't the most exciting fight that the series has had so far, it was still extremely entertaining, being a brilliant continuation form last issue. What I loved most about the fight sequence was that it had some interesting narration and dialogue during it, showing how the change of characteristics that Banshee has since becoming a Horseman perfectly. I also enjoyed the teamwork that would come from Havok and Wasp later in the fight.

This issue would also see Wonder Man join Scarlet Witch in helping the Apocalypse Twins. It wasn't this sequence in itself that I personally found interesting, but rather the developments that would come a bit later on in the issue when Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man get a chance to speak in private. Now I won't go into any details at all about that sequence as to avoid spoilers, but I will say that the development was ever so slightly shocking, and that I look forward to seeing how it will play out in the next couple of issues.

We'd also get to see more of the Daken torturing Wolverine in this issue, which I was very happy to see. Much like the Havok/Banshee fight the best thing about this sequence would be the dialogue, with it adding a lot more depth and drama to the sequence. I also especially enjoyed the intensity of the sequence as well, as the emotional drive from both a vengeful son and regretful father made this sequence much more dramatic and suspenseful, also making it much more exciting and entertaining as well.

I will also quickly add that there is a part of the solicit that is wrong, as Sentry doesn't kill anyone in this issue, having very little to do with the issue at all, but I personally wasn't overly bothered with this, though do hope that it will happen in the next issue.

Final Verdict

This was a fantastic issue, as although it's still mainly set-up work it did it in a very dramatic way that has me hooked for the next issue. It also had some shocking and intense moments, with some fun action sequences as well. Due to all this I'd highly recommend this issue, and the series so far, as although it hasn't been quite as good in recent months, it's starting to gradually get back to that high level of quality that the first five issues of this story had.

Mighty Avengers #2 Review

Writer: Al Ewing
Artist: Greg Land

This series started well, as although the opening issue wasn't outstanding it did a good job of kicking things off, as well as doing a decent job of fitting the series in with the Infinity event. I do however expect the series to improve though, and will be disappointed if it doesn't.

Plot

As the newly formed Mighty Avengers fight Proxima Midnight, Blue Marvel learns of a Level 7 attack, and Ebony Maw tries to corrupt Doctor Strange.

Review

This was a brilliant issue and a fantastic continuation from the first. Al Ewing did a great job of continuing the high pace that he added near the end of the first issue, whilst also adding some other development points and characters to the series at the same time. I did however question whether it was crucial to start this series during Infinity, as although it's been very fun and entertaining so far, it hasn't really done much for the event, expanding slightly on a earlier development of the main series. I did however enjoy how Ewing had the public helping, and overall he made this a very fun issue, and I'm sure he'll do an even better job once Infinity is finished.

The artwork on this issue was once again brilliant, and didn't have as many of the classic annoying trademarks that Greg Land is known for, with there being very few glamorous women, and little opportunity for awkward smiles. There was however still the odd awkward facial expression, with Blue Marvel showing a couple near the start of the issue. Land's layouts were however once again outstanding, and especially once the action  sequence kicked back in, adding a lot of depth whilst also being dynamic, and overall helped the story to flow very smoothly and naturally. The inks from Jay Leisten and colours from Frank D'Armata were also brilliant making the final product look even more crisper and vibrant.

This issue would start with Ebony Maw continuing to work his way into Doctor Strange's subconscious. I initially questioned the necessity of this sequence, as it only appeared to be repeating something that happened in New Avengers #9. It did however become apparent why this was added later on in the issue, though even then I questioned whether it was truly necessary. I will however say that it is nice to see another connection to Infinity, and if Ewing handles this set-up properly in the next issue it will be a brilliant addition to the story.

This issue would also introduce a new character to the series in the form of Blue Marvel. Now I know very little about Blue Marvel so don't know whether his addition to the team will be a good thing or not. I have however enjoyed that Ewing has added a few lesser used characters to the team, as it allows them to get more notice. In this issue however I especially enjoyed the interaction that Blue Marvel would have with the Watcher, as although it slowed the issue down, it would allow Blue Marvel as a character to be introduced nicely into the series. On top of that it's always interesting to see the Watcher as you know that there's possibly something spectacular about to happen.

The bulk of this issue however would continue the fight between this newly formed Avengers team (Luke Cage, Superior Spider-Man, Spectrum, and a mysterious man in a Spider-Man suit) fighting Proxima Midnight. Now this was easily the best sequence in the issue, and was what made it so exciting. The explosive nature of it was simply brilliant, as was the shocking developments. The best part however would come when it looked like the Avengers were beat, and the public rallied them on, as this would just go to show how much the Avengers mean to the public.

Final Verdict

This was a fantastic issue and a great continuation from the first issue. It continues the amazing action brilliantly, adding a new character to the series as well. It was also very dramatic at times, and had some amazing dialogue. Crossover wise however it felt a little unnecessary, as although the story was very fun it didn't add anything new to the event itself. Due to all this I'd recommend this issue, but due to it not being that important crossover wise I'd only recommend to people who have a wider budget, or spare cash.

Rating: 8/10

Mighty Avengers #1 Review

Writer: Al Ewing
Artist: Greg Land

I wasn't originally planning on getting this series, as although I am happy to see Luke Cage back in a major comic book series, I couldn't fit it into my budget. I have however since been able to get the first couple of issues and hope to get the series at least during Infinity, but probably won't be getting the series on the release date.

Plot

Luke Cage has been working with the Heroes for Hire, but when Thanos' army attacks the Earth he must form a new team of Avengers... Mighty Avengers.

Review

This was a very good start for the series, as although it wasn't outstanding, it did a brilliant job of re-introducing the characters for this series. Now Al Ewing isn't a writer that I'm familiar with, so I didn't know what to expect. Ewing would however show throughout this issue that he has an understanding for the characters, as well as a good imagination, even if some of the developments were a little too weird. Ewing also did a decent job of fitting this in with the Infinity crossover, as a lot of new series can be ruined due to events, whereas this one handles it in a calm way, with it naturally progressing into the events developments.

The artwork in this issue was also good, as although I'm not a huge fan of Greg Land's work this has to be some of his better work, showing that he can be a good artist. The issue does however still have the regular Land problems, with every woman looking like a super model, and smiles looking as awkward as possible. Land did however produce some amazing layouts, which were very dynamic, adding a lot of depth to the issue. The layout also helped to make the action sequences more exciting, also helping the issue to flow a lot smoother. The backgrounds however were a bit plain, but I could easily live with that as it wasn't a huge problem.

This issue would start with Luke Cage and a group he's assembled doing some Heroes for Hire work, which the Superior Spider-Man gatecrashes. Now I loved that Ewing decided to give this a Heroes for Hire feel to it, as although it was fitting that it would eventually turn into a Avengers team book, it was nice to see Cage in his iconic role of Hero for Hire. I did however also enjoy the interaction between Cage and Spider-Man in this, as although I haven't been the biggest fan of the whole Doctor Octopus becoming Spider-Man, Ewing managed to show the change in characteristics perfectly, without making it too obvious, and overall the interaction between these two characters was very entertaining.

Cage would be working with White Tiger and the current Power Man (Victor Alvarez) during the Heroes for Hire part of this issue, and hence it would have two Power Men involved. Now when I first heard about this new Power Man I was very interested to see how Cage would react to him, and although due to not reading the character in anything before I don't know whether this has happened yet. I was however happy that it did here, and the interaction was amazing. I just loved how the difference in both characters age gap was obvious, and the fiery attitude of Alvarez added brilliant tone to the issue.

Now usually with a new team book I would talk about the team, and what I thought of the choices, but this issue the team wouldn't form until the end of the issue, and even then it didn't feel quite like a full team. Anyway I already said how I enjoyed Cage and Superior Spider-Man being a part of this series (even though I don't think Spider-Man will be a good fit in the long run), but the addition of Spectrum (Monica Rambeau) and a mysterious male would make things even more interesting. I especially found the mysterious man to be intriguing, and his choice of outfit was both humorous as well as weird, and I look forward to finding out his true identity.

Final Verdict

This was a good issue, and although it wasn't outstanding, it was better than I dreaded it would be, being a brilliant starting issue for the series. It also tied in with the Infinity event nicely, and although there were some weird moments it was overall an enjoyable issue. Due to this I'd recommend this issue, but it isn't the best Avengers issue, so only if you have spare cash after getting the main part of Infinity.

New Avengers #11 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Mike Deodato Jr.

This has so far been an amazing series, and the Infinity event has made it even better, and so far has been one of the best events that Marvel has produced in years. The New Avengers and Avengers tie-ins however have also been wonderful, and for the first couple of months the New Avengers parts stood out as the best the event had to offer, though the main event itself has rightfully taken over that spot for now.

Plot

The Illuminati are taken to another universe where they meet a different set of Builders. Meanwhile Proxima Midnight goes to war with Wakanda.

Review

This was an amazing issue, as although it wasn't quite as good as the previous New Avengers Infinity tie-ins, it was still brilliant, being extremely interesting and exciting throughout. Jonathan Hickman so far has done a great job of balancing the three main series involved in this event, as although New Avengers and Avengers style and tone make it obvious that they're tie-ins, they also add more depth to the story as a whole. Hickman would also give some very interesting developments in this issue that played off this weeks Avengers issue perfectly, without spoiling it for anyone who decided to read this issue first. There was also a lot of excitement in this issue, and the end of this story is looking even more interesting.

The artwork in this issue was also fantastic, and Mike Deodato Jr. once again did a phenomenal job. The detail of Deodato Jr.'s art was also outstanding, as it was very consistent throughout, being simply perfect. The layouts of Deodato Jr.'s artwork was also once again brilliant, as it was very dynamic, and added a lot of excitement and depth to the issue. I also felt that Deodato Jr. handled the action in this issue perfectly, with it being very explosive and exciting, having a brilliant tone and atmosphere to it as well. I was however once again not a fan of how he drew Beast, as although he continues to improve with Thanos, I still feel that his version of the Beast is way too big, and too much like a gorilla.

The main development in this issue would be the Illuminati being taken by an Aleph of an other universe to meet with the Builders and Ex Nihili of another universe. This was probably the most interesting sequence in this issue, as although it may have not been the most exciting, it would have the most impact on the event as a whole. The interaction between these Builders and the Illuminati was very interesting and dramatic, and I especially enjoyed the different attitude that these Builders had. I was however not that fond of the different look for the Ex Nihili's though, as I much prefer the normal gold and black colour.

There would also be a big fight sequence as Proxima Midnight would lead an army against Wakanda, with the ultimate goal of finding the location of the missing Infinity Gem. This was easily the most exciting sequence in this issue, as although the Builders appearance had a more interesting development point, the action was simply amazing being very intense and exciting. I also loved the interaction between the Cull Obsidian prior to this, and the dialogue between Proximan Midnight and Black Panther (Shuri) throughout it added a lot of drama and suspense as well.

Thanos would also make an appearance in this issue, showing how he is continuing with his search for both Thane and the remaining Infinity Gem. Now the fight Thanos had with Black Bolt was amazing, so I was slightly surprised to see how calm he was in this issue, though this is Thanos so that fight would have probably been nothing to him. I did however enjoy seeing his interaction with his Cull Obsidian, and the discovery that he made in this issue was also very interesting, though his response to it was slightly disappointing, though worked perfectly with Thanos' characteristics.

Final Verdict

This was yet another fantastic tie-in issue, as although it wasn't quite as good as the previous tie-in issues that New Avengers has produced, it was still a very exciting and enjoyable issue. It also had some brilliant action, as well as having a lot of drama and suspense throughout. On top of that there was some very interesting developments that have me looking forward to Infinity #5 even more than I already was. Due to all this I'd highly recommend this issue, as well as the main Infinity event and the Avengers tie-ins as they are all truly amazing.

Avengers #21 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Leinil Francis Yu

Infinity has been an amazing event so far, and one of the best that Marvel has produced in a while. Although the main series itself has been the stand out part of this event, as it should be, the Avengers and New Avengers tie-ins have also been simply outstanding.

Plot

Following the surprising death of a Builder at the hands of Thor, Captain America and his army take the fight to straight to the Builders.

Review

This was yet another brilliant issue in the Infinity event, and one of the best from the Avengers series. Jonathan Hickman followed on from the amazing events of Infinity #4 perfectly, keeping the story flowing smoothly. The issue did however fall down in quality for the same reason every other Avengers issue in Infinity has, and that's due to Hickman not wanting to take too much of the development away from Infinity itself, using this to work in some extra development. In saying that this was still a very exciting and dramatic issue, as although there wasn't as much suspense in the action as there is in the Infinity issues, they were still very entertaining sequences, having a fantastic tone.

The artwork was also amazing, as although like last issue it wasn't Leinil Francis Yu's best work, it was still outstanding. It was however not to the level of quality that Yu usually produces, with the artwork lacking in detail at times, and having a few imperfections. It was however overall wonderful, and for most of the issue it was simply beautiful. The layout of Yu's artwork was also once again outstanding, being extremely dynamic, adding a lot of tone and depth to the issue, showing why Yu's style's perfect for this tie-in. The action sequences were also very exciting and explosive, and it showed exactly why cosmic battles can be some of the best that comics produce visual wise.

This issue would start by showing that Captain Universe is still in a coma following her time as one of the Builders prisoners. Now there would be more development to this later in the issue, and although I won't go into any details about that I will say what I thought of her addition in this issue. Although I'm not the biggest Captain Universe fan I was very happy that she was brought back into this story with this issue, as due to her having a lot to do with the build-up to Infinity it was natural for her to have some impact. After reading this issue however I do see why Hickman has kept her back, as it has made this appearance much more exciting, and I hope she continues to appear throughout the rest of the event.

Following the death of a Builder the Kree work on repairing the power, and preventing the demise of the Supreme Intelligence. Now it would be the interaction between the Supreme Intelligence, and one Kree member in particular that interested me most about this sequence, with the Supreme Intelligence believing that the death of a Builder at Thor's hands was nothing but luck, and that it doesn't change anything. What I enjoyed about that was that it showed disbelieve in the Avengers, as following the boost in morale this kind of criticism from such an intelligent being makes you look at the bigger picture, showing that whether he's right or wrong that there's still a lot of work to be done.

Captain America and his army would continue on from their victory in Infinity #4 by taking the fight to the Builders, allowing Ronan to lead them into battle. Now this was easily one of the best parts of this issue, as although the development near the end would probably be my favourite part of the issue, this was probably the next, being very exciting. What I liked most however was the tone, as it managed to be rather sombre and elegant, feeling like an action scene from a film that's quite. I also loved seeing all the Avengers that were involved in this fight, and especially the likes of Hulk and Hyperion, who looked like the powerhouses they are.

Final Verdict

This was yet another amazing addition to the Infinity event, and although much like the other Avengers tie-ins it didn't come close the the outstanding developments that the main Infinity series has been producing, it has still been very interesting, working of the main series perfectly. The issue would also have a lot of drama and excitement, having some rather intriguing developments of itself. Due to this I'd highly recommend this issue, as well as both the Infinity series itself, and the New Avengers tie-ins, as they three series give the best reading experience for this event.

Infinity #4 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Jerome Opeña & Dustin Weaver

This has been a phenomenal crossover event so far, and although it took a while to become phenomenal, it has been brilliant since the start, with the main event as well as the Avengers and New Avengers tie-ins also being amazing. It did however jump to another level with the last issue, and I just hope that it continues to be great, as so far it has been the event that Marvel has needed for years.

Plot

As Captain America goes over his final plans with the Council, he sends Thor to negotiate their surrender. Meanwhile Thanos battles Blackbolt over the location of his son, Thane.

Review

This was yet another phenomenal issue, and this series has certainly moved up a level over the last couple of issues. Jonathan Hickman once again does a fantastic job of following on from both the last issue as well as the Avenger tie-in. Hickman also added a lot of drama and suspense in this issue, and although the start of the issue was slightly slow, it made up for that quickly, being very exciting for most of the issue. The dialogue in this issue was also terrific, and especially during the Thanos/Black Bolt fight, helping to add depth, as well as in this case tension. Hickman also once again did a brilliant job of balancing the two stories involved in this issue, allowing each to compliment the other.

The artwork in this issue was also fantastic, and Jerome Opeña and Dustin Weaver once again did an amazing job. The detail from both artists was spectacular as usual, being very consistent throughout. Both artists also compliment each other perfectly, as although I've always preferred Opeña's art slightly, Weaver's works perfectly alongside it, with both having very similar styles and tones. I also really enjoy how Weaver handled the Thanos/Black Bolt fight, as it was very exciting and explosive, and along with the layouts both artists produced for this issue, it was easily the best thing about the artwork. On top of all that both artists also did a fantastic job of showing the emotion in this issue, adding a lot of tone with it.

This issue would give us a deeper looking into Thanos' son, Thane, showing him as a healer in the Hidden City of Orollan. Now I won't go into too much detail as to avoid any spoilers, but this issue would give us a very good look at the character that has caused Thanos' wrath, also giving him some sort of origin as well. This was something that I really enjoyed, as after it was revealed that Thanos was looking for his son I was wondering what sort of role his son would play. Now this issue doesn't actually answer that question, but it would give a lot of development for the character, as well as hint at what his future may be.

Cause of Thane, Thanos and Black Bolt would become involved in a huge battle, that sees Thanos pushed to his very limits. This was a fight that I was looking forward to since the start of the series, and although I was expecting it to come a little later in the series, I'm going to complain, as it was a brilliant fight. I also liked that  due to Black Bolt battling Thanos in this fight it allowed him to use his full powers, not  back. I also loved the carnage that would come due to this fight, and the development that would come out of it. The fight itself was also very intense and exciting, adding a lot of entertainment to the issue.

The other part of this issue would see the Avengers try and negotiate some form of peaceful surrender with the Builders, with Captain America sending Thor to do the negotiating. Now the moment that it was revealed that Thor would be the negotiator I was very happy, as due to the cover I expected him to have a big involvement in this issue, and was glad that he did. Without going into any details I also really enjoyed the form of negotiation that Thor took, and this sequence turned out exactly as I expected, but in a very unique way, and overall this has been some of Hickman's smartest work on the event.

Final Verdict

This was an amazing issue, and so far this has easily been the best crossover event that Marvel has done in a long time. This issue itself had plenty of suspense and drama, with tons of excitement, and brilliant character depth. It also had a fantastic fight between Thanos and Black Bolt, and has really shaken up the development of the event. Due to all this I'd highly recommend this issue, as well as the rest of the series so far.

Avengers #20 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Leinil Francis Yu

Infinity has amazes me on so many levels so far, as although it's not the best event that I've ever read, it is the best in recent years, and has the potential to even become one of the best of all time. The Avengers and New Avengers tie-ins have also been amazing, and sometimes better with the series flowing through all three series perfectly.

Plot

Having currently won a battle against the Builders the Avengers head to rescue their captured members and plan their next move.

Review

This was a brilliant issue, and yet another solid issue in this fabulous event. Jonathan Hickman has done a fantastic job of continuing from the Avengers victory in Infinity #3 as although this wasn't as exciting as that issue, it was still very dramatic setting up the next part brilliantly. The issue also had plenty of other development points throughout, as although there were some parts that I was slightly disappointed about it was still overall a very enjoyable read, and I am glad that the event has managed to keep up this consistent level of quality. I also loved how Hickman handled the dialogue in this issue as it managed to keep the story interesting, adding little bits of excitement here and there.

I was actually slightly disappointed with the artwork in this issue, as although it was overall brilliant it wan't as good as Leinil Francis Yu usually produces. Overall however Yu did do a great job, and continues to bring the perfect style for this story. The only problem that I had with his artwork was that there were quite a few imperfections in his artwork, with not quite as much detail as he usually gives. He did however once again produce some amazing layouts, that were very dramatic, adding a lot of depth to the issue. Yu also once again did a great job of adding excitement, as although once again there wasn't much action, there were still some sequences that were quite intense, having plenty of emotion to them.

The last issue of Infinity would see the Avengers get a victory over the Builders. Due to this they are able to go and free the captured Avengers in this issue. I personally felt that this sequence was very exciting and interesting, as although it wasn't what I quite how I expected the captured Avengers to be free, it was still very interesting, being a very explosive sequence. I also loved the interaction between characters throughout the sequence, and especially the interaction between the captured Avengers just prior to being rescued, as it added a bit of humour to the issue.

The other development for the Avengers in this issue would see them plan their next move against the Builders. Now I won't go into any details as to avoid spoilers, but this was yet another interesting sequence, and unlike the previous planning sequences this one was also slightly exciting, having a lot of tension between the characters involved. I also really enjoyed how emotional this sequence was, as you could see the passion in some of the characters, which was brilliant, and along with the amazing dialogue that made this sequence a little more impressive.

They wouldn't be the only developments in this issue, as with the issue being full of developments we would also see some from the Builders, as well as the Ex Nihili's. Now again I won't go into any details over the plot in this but the sequence that featured the Ex Nihili's was very interesting, as although nothing too exciting happened in this issue, it would cause a very interesting development that I look forward to seeing expanded on.

Final Verdict

This was a fantastic issue, and although the Avengers series is still not standing out as much as the other two series, it is still very consistent, not being that far behind the other two. The issue itself also had plenty of developments, making me extremely interested in what happens next. Due to all this I would highly recommend this issue, as well as the rest of the Avengers tie-ins, the New Avengers tie-ins, and of course Infinity itself.

Infinity #3 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artists: Jerome Opeña & Dustin Weave

I have really been enjoying Infinity so far, and after a couple of poor events I'm happy that Marvel have finally gotten their act together. The story has progressed brilliant so far, and the Avengers and New Avengers issues work as brilliant tie-ins, being crucial to the story.

Plot

The Avengers prepare for battle against the Builders whilst Black Bolt prepares to be confronted by Thanos.

Review

This was a phenomenal issue, and my favourite of the event so far. Jonathan Hickman has been doing an amazing job with this event as a whole, but what stood out for me in this issue was that it took the recent events in Avengers and New Avengers and expanded on them in a very explosive, and exciting way. I also loved how Hickman managed to keep some mystery in the event, as although he's revealing something shocking every now and then, he seems to still have some stuff kept up his sleeve. I also felt that this issue was very dramatic, and suspenseful, also having some brilliant dialogue, and interactions. I also loved how it's taken the story a major step forward, whilst leaving some fuel in the tank for the second half.

The art on this issue was once again done by Jerome Opeña and Dustin Weaver. Both artists once again did a fantastic job, and although I probably still preferred Opeña's artwork slightly there isn't a huge lot between the two artists. The detail by both artists was simply outstanding, with each sequence being stunning, and especially the ones centred around the Avengers in space. The action in this issue was also handled perfectly between both artists, literally being very explosive, as well as exciting, adding a lot more drama, and tone to the issue. Justin Ponsor also once again did an outstanding job of colouring this issue, and it's his colours that help keep the artwork more consistent.

The last issue of the Avengers would see the Builders learn the location of the Avengers, and the Galactic Council, making the planets in their way surrender to them. I found this to be a very interesting development, showing just how powerful the Builders were. I also enjoyed how it allowed for differences of priorities of the Council members, with some seeing surrender as the wise option, and others not wanting to be controlled, preferring to fight like a warrior, even if that means dying like one.

Even though some of the Council would leave, this didn't stop Captain America and his Avengers come up with a plan, taking the fight to the Builders. Now I won't go into much detail over what happens, but it was a very exciting development point, having some explosive moments. I also loved how suspenseful the sequence was, and how it made the event a bit more lively, as although there has been plenty of action so far, there hasn't been anything quite like this, also being a genius decision.

This issue would also see Thanos make his way to Attilan to confront Black Bolt. Now I won't go into any details over this sequence, as it happens quite a bit into the issue, and I'd prefer to avoid any spoilers anyway. As you would probably guess however, the encounter isn't too friendly, being extremely exciting, and suspenseful. It wasn't however quite as exciting as the Avengers doing battle with the Builders, but still exciting in it own way. It also ended on a brilliant note, leaving me extremely excited for the next part of this marvellous event.

Final Verdict

This was an amazing issue, and my personal favourite of the event so far. It had so much excitement, and suspense, as well as plenty of drama. The developments were also very dramatic, adding some energy to the event. It also had some brilliant action sequences, and has me hooked for the next part. Due to this it's easy to recommend this issue, and I'd also recommend the rest of the event as well.

New Avengers #10 Review

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Mike Deodato Jr.

So far Infinity has been a fantastic event, and one of the best that Marvel has produced in recent years, with the main tie-ins being just as interesting as the main event, as well as slightly better at times. In fact the last issue of this is the best issue that I feel the event has produced so far.

Plot

Black Bolt has informed the rest of the Illuminati members about Thanos' secret son and how they must find him. Also Thanos isn't overall happy with the news that his Cull Obsidian have brought him.

Review

This was a fantastic issue, and although not quite as good as the last still one of the better Infinity has produced so far. Jonathan Hickman has been producing some of his best work on this event, as juggling one story over three series' can't be easy, but Hickman manages to do it brilliantly. This issue continues from where Infinity #2 left off as although some people haven't liked the development being through three series, I personally feel that they work into each other perfectly. This issue itself was very dramatic, and exciting, with amazing dialogue and encounters, though it didn't have too much development which stopped it from being perfect.

The art in this issue was outstanding, and Mike Deodato, Jr. did a phenomenal job. The detail in his artwork is simply amazing, as everything looks so crisp and neat. I also loved the layout from Deodato Jr. in this issue, as well as the way he showed the characters emotions, as although it can be slightly stiff and awkward looking at times, for the majority of the issue it's amazing. I will however now move onto the small thing that bugged me, and that was how he drew Beast. The artwork itself was nice and brilliantly detailed, but I felt that he looked too much like a gorilla, also being way too big, dwarfing the rest of the Illuminati whilst sitting round a table. I did however prefer his artwork on Thanos this time round.

The last issue of Infinity would show that besides the remaining Infinity Gem, Thanos is also looking for his son, wanting him dead. That was an amazing development from the event, and I loved how it continued in this issue. I also found the discussion between Black Bolt, and his fellow Illuminati members to be very interesting, and their reaction to the news was also very enjoyable. I've also loved in general how Hickman has allowed Black Bolt a chance to speak without destroying everything nearby, and how he's becoming a key part of this story.

Ultimately Black Bolt would task his fellow Illuminati members with finding Thanos son, preventing his death. Now I won't go into too much discussion over how this affected the plot of this issue as to avoid spoilers, but I will say my thoughts on the discussion the remaining Illuminati members had once they left Black Bolt. The sequence itself was very dramatic, with plenty of suspense. It also had a brilliant atmosphere, and overall had a lot of tone to it, showing the different emotions of the Illuminati perfectly.

This issue would also see Thanos' Cull Obsidian return with the information they gathered. Now Thanos being apart of this event has been what I've been most interested in, but up till now I feel that we haven't seen him at his best, as although he's used people to do his work in the past, it's always better when he has a more hands on approach. This issue would however show more of the Thanos I love, as he would show his disgust at Black Dwarf's failure, also adding a lot of excitement to the issue.

Final Verdict

Although not quite as good as the last issue this was yet another brilliant instalment in the Infinity event, following on from Infinity #2 perfectly. The issue itself was very dramatic and exciting, though it did lack in action, being more of a set-up issue. I would however highly recommend this issue, and the event so far, and will be moving straight onto Infinity #3 which was also out this week.
